Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC)

“The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life.’ 136 ‘The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.'”137
Catechism of the Catholic Church, ¶1324

The Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) is a lay person who assists the Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (priests and deacons) in the distribution of Holy Communion. This ministry of and to the faithful occurs when there are insufficient clergy to administer Communion because of the size of our parish.

Who can serve as an EMHC?

An EMHC needs to be:

  1. a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Community
  2. baptized and confirmed
  3. willing to attend a training session
  4. willing to spiritually prepare before serving at Mass
  5. willing to grow in their faith and ministry
