The SJCC Cancer Support Group holds meetings for people whose lives have been touched by this disease. Our goals are to help people to receive the emotional and educational support throughout the experience with cancer.
Even though many people are supported by family and friends when receiving a cancer diagnosis, the main reason they choose to join a support group is to be with others with similar cancer experiences. The group offers a safe space to share feelings and challenges while at the same time, learning from others who are facing similar situations.
Loneliness and isolation are other common feelings because even the most supportive family members and friends cannot understand exactly how it feels to have cancer. This can help reduce stress. Exchanging information and advice may provide a sense of control and reduce feelings of helplessness. Many studies have shown that support groups help people with cancer feel less depressed and anxious and more hopeful
