High School Mission Trip 2019 Information
We are excited to announce plans for our SJCC 2019 High School Mission Trip!
**Registrations received by FEBRUARY 11 will receive a $200 DISCOUNT from SJCC.**
Permission Form and $100 deposit must be received by February 11 to be eligible for the discount. Details below.
When registration opens in February, SJCC will be applying for participant and chaperone spots in a Catholic Service Work Camp/Retreat Program called Encounter the Gospel of Life (EGL). EGL is an awesome service camp experience (focusing on direct-relational ministry) coupled with a week of fun, faith, and fellowship. You can find more information about the program at www.eglweb.org.
The dates for EGL are July 7-12, 2019.
Participants will be housed at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and will do service work in Washington, DC and surrounding areas. You can view a list of possible service sites here. EGL chooses service sites where students have the opportunity to develop relationships with the people they serve, rather than doing “behind the scenes” work.
Parents will be responsible for transporting their child to UMD on July 7 and picking up their child from UMD on July 12. Carpools will not be arranged by SJCC, but parents may arrange their own carpools. Transportation to service sites throughout the week will be arranged by the EGL program.
In addition to service work during the day, students spend time in the evenings having fun, building friendships and community, participating in Mass and Sacraments, and growing in their faith.
All SJCC participants must submit a permission form with their initial deposit. The PERMISSION FORM can be found here.
SJCC participants and chaperones will also be responsible for completing all EGL paperwork (not yet available) by the requested deadlines.
SJCC students will be required to complete a one-hour Worthy of the Call Training at SJCC. If students have already completed this, it is valid until age 18.
Cost for Students
The 2019 EGL program fees have not yet been posted, but last year’s program cost was $400-450 per participant. SJCC participants will be responsible for paying this year’s EGL program fee, whatever that may be. See information about SJCC discounts below.
SJCC Priority Deadline DISCOUNT
SJCC students who submit a permission form and non-refundable $100 deposit by February 11 will receive a $200 scholarship from SJCC toward their EGL program costs. This is a FIRM DEADLINE, so please do not delay in submitting PAYMENT and FORM to the parish office by February 4 if you would like to take advantage of the maximum discount and the best chance of securing a space on the trip.
Registrations received between February 12 – March 15 will be eligible for a $100 scholarship discount from SJCC. Acceptance in the program is dependent on the availability of space.
Registrations received March 16 or later will pay full price. Acceptance in the program is dependent on the availability of space.
Checks should be made payable to SJCC with ‘Mission Trip’ and the student’s name on the memo line.
Important Note about Student-Chaperone Ratio
We are required to send one adult chaperone for every six students attending. We are confident that the numbers will work out, but please be aware that student spaces on the trip are not guaranteed until the required ratio is met. If we are unable to find enough chaperones for the number of students who would like to attend, students will be offered spaces on the trip in the order that forms + initial payment were received. If any student is declined a space on the trip for this reason, the initial deposit will be returned in full.
Costs and Requirements for Chaperones
Chaperone costs will be PAID IN FULL by SJCC, provided that all VIRTUS requirements and other EGL paperwork requirements have been met.
In accordance with Archdiocesan guidelines, all chaperones will need to have completed VIRTUS paperwork and VIRTUS online training.
Those interested in attending as chaperones are asked to:
- Email Doris at email@example.com as early as possible to indicate your interest in being a chaperone and to receive instructions about completing (or verifying) VIRTUS requirements/status.
- Submit a permission slip, available here, by February 4.
SJCC will be taking one chaperone for every six students on the Mission Trip. If we have more chaperone applicants than space allows, priority will be given to chaperones who have already completed their VIRTUS requirements and EGL paperwork.
Please contact Doris at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss additional financial aid, scholarships, and payment plan options if needed.
High School Happenings
My name is Scott Link and I’m the coordinator of Youth Ministry here at SJCC! I’ve been working in Youth ministry for over 10 years now. I graduated from Calvert Hall in ’99 and Lynchburg College in ’03. I was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame for lacrosse at Lynchburg and still play weekly with Severn River Lacrosse Club in Annapolis! I attribute my love for the Church to my awesome family (my four brothers and my amazing parents). I learned about faith from watch my mom praying for us constantly as we traveled back and forth from the hospital for stitches and casts (she should be canonized someday since it’s a miracle that we are all still alive, proof that prayer does work). I love all sports, mountain biking, being Catholic, traveling, movies, hiking, Italy (and all its food), the Pope, music, my gorgeous holy wife, my hilarious 3 daughters and doing youth ministry. My favorite saying is “In coelo quies est” (Latin) or “In Heaven there is rest.” I still can’t believe that I get paid to talk to teens about Jesus and the Church – sure beats tents making (like St. Paul).
