What is a Marriage Convalidation?
A Marriage Convalidation is the process by which a civil marriage is recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church. The word “convalidation” comes from Latin and means “to make valid.” Through this process, a couple enters into a valid Catholic marriage.
Why is a Marriage Convalidation Needed?
Catholics are called to be married according to the Catholic Rite.
Having your marriage recognized by the Church brings several important blessings:
- Peace of heart and mind in aligning your life with God’s will
- A sacramental marriage, which is a lifelong covenant that reflects God’s love
- Spiritual support for one another as you journey toward eternal life
- Full participation in the Sacramental life of the Church, including receiving the Eucharist and serving as Godparents
Those in marriages not recognized by the Church are still encouraged to attend Mass regularly, but may not receive certain sacraments until their marriage is convalidated.
Is There a Cost?
While there is no cost for a Marriage Convalidation, there is a fee if a marriage prep course is recommended.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The timeline depends on how quickly the required materials are completed and submitted.
These may include:
- Baptismal records
- Witness forms
- Other necessary documentation
Should We Wait to Begin?
It’s best not to wait. Beginning the process sooner allows you to fully participate in the sacramental life of the Church.
If you are currently in OCIA (formerly RCIA), please note that you must complete your Marriage Convalidation before receiving sacraments.
Because clergy work with couples on a first-come, first-served basis, starting early is important.
What If I Married a Non-Catholic?
If you are Catholic and married a non-Catholic outside the Church, permission can be requested from the Diocese for your convalidation.
What If I’m Not a Parishioner?
You will need to be a registered parishioner of Saint Joseph Catholic Church to begin the process here. If you belong to another parish, please contact them directly for assistance. Interested in becoming a registered parishioner? Please click here to register.
What If There Was a Previous Marriage?
An annulment is required for any previous marriage (unless a former spouse has passed away), even if it was only a civil marriage.
An annulment is not the same as a divorce—it is a process that determines whether a valid marriage ever existed in the eyes of the Church. We are happy to help guide you through this process, and there is no fee.
Will We Receive Guidance Along the Way?
Yes. You will receive a checklist and work closely with a member of the clergy, who will be available to support you throughout the process.
